He has received the Berlin Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Whiting Writers' Award, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in fiction, three Pushcart Prizes, and the Morton Dauwen Zabel Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
